The IHSS Biomedical project main objective was the substantial improvement in the quality of care to Honduras patients, through the use of high-end tech medical equipment and preventive and corrective maintenance with replacement parts for a 7 year period, starting October 1, 2011. The project included improvement on equipment for 11 types of services such as: resonances, CT, Mammography, X-Rays with fluoroscopy, conventional X-rays, ultrasounds, laparoscopic surgeries, video endoscopies, lithotripsy, densitometer, and angiography.
Project’s Scope
The contract included the repair, preventive and corrective maintenance with supply and spare parts. The breakdown is as follows:
- 350 installed medical equipment which were already part of the IHSS’s inventory
- 324 new equipment
- 115 radiation protection accessories
According to the third clause of contract No. 020-2011, IHSS increased by 24.85% the amount of the contract with which these were acquired:
- 234 new equipment for various IHSS wards
- 75 radiation protection accessories
Summing up 908 pieces of equipment included in the contract of integral services.
DIMESA was responsible for all the radiation protection accessories needed where the equipment emitting ionizing radiation was going to be installed, in other words, walls were lead covered in all the rooms where such equipment was going to be installed, similarly DIMESA donated the electrical protection, labor, air conditioners, supplies, surveillance cameras, and the magnetic screen doors.
Additionally, among some of the outstanding services provided are:
Mammograms:
- Equipment installed: two analogous seven year old General Electric Stereotaxis model 2 mammograms were repaired.
- New equipment: cutting-edge tech General Electric Breast DS digital model mammograms were supplied which allows two millimeters breast tumor early detection, something that the previous equipment could not detect.
- Mammograms increased by 56% due to the use of these equipments.

The financial benefit provided by this project totals 844 million lemps.
In addition to all of the foregoing, it is evident that the number of surgeries that were accumulated over the years has been greatly reduced during the end of 2013. It should also be noted that the number of radiology tests have significantly decreased which represents timely responses to each patient and significant savings to the institution.
